How do you start up a business?
How do you start up a business?
This is the one question that often comes up for discussion. Is there one way, or the right way to start up a business, or does every entrepreneur have their own method and a different answer to this question?
To help you collectively get a better idea of how to startup a small business in Canada we looked at a few other sources, so you don’t have to.
According to the US Small Business Administration website, they have a 10 step process to starting a small business. Here it is:

Take advantage of free training and counseling services, from preparing a business plan and securing financing, to expanding or relocating a business.
Step 3: Choose a Business Location
Get advice on how to select a customer-friendly location and comply with zoning laws.
Step 4: Finance Your Business
Find government backed loans, venture capital and research grants to help you get started.
But we are in Canada. Does that still apply, you ask?
Well let’s take a look at the next source to help us answer the question of how do you start up a business? This time we took a look at the Canadian government website.
Seems as if the Canadian government offers a little bit more in-depth details on how to start a small business. To summarize:
- Planning your business
- Organizing your finances
- Registering your business
- Hiring and managing employees
- Additional resources
We went even further to look at the Entrepreneur Magazine, for an article on the 7 steps towards starting your own small business.
1. Take time to brainstorm.
2. Create a business plan.
3. Gather needed resources.
4. Launch marketing and brand-awareness campaigns.
5. Get the finances in shape.
6. Create a maintenance list.
7. Set future goals.
If that’s not a clear picture of what you need to do to figure out how to start a business, maybe this 6 step process to starting a small business could help. Also from the Entrepreneur Mag.
1. Write a one-page business plan.
2. Decide on a budget.
3. Decide on a legal entity.
4. Take care of the money.
5. Get your website.
6. Test sales.
As you may be able to notice, each of the sources, be it the US government, or the Canadian government or the Entrepreneur Magazine, they all have a few things in common. Sure they are all a but different in their won way (you can see more by reading more on their own pages), but the commonalities include “business plan”, “funding”, “guidance”.
